We have kept other operators' details general on purpose. Schedules and fares change, so check the operator before you travel.

By Bus

Intercity buses run between Buffalo and Toronto several times a day. Most leave from the downtown Buffalo bus terminal, and some trips start at Buffalo Airport. In Toronto they arrive at the Union Station Bus Terminal at 81 Bay Street, a short walk from Union Station.

It is the cheapest way to make the trip. The trade-off is the timetable: you travel when the bus does, with stops on the way, and you still need to get from the terminal to where you are staying.

By Train

Amtrak's Maple Leaf runs once a day in each direction between New York and Toronto. It stops at Buffalo-Depew station and ends at Toronto Union Station, in the middle of downtown.

The train does not stop at Buffalo Airport, so flying in usually means a ride to Depew first, and with one departure a day, the timing has to work with your flight.

By Rental Car

Most major rental companies at Buffalo Airport let you drive their cars into Canada, with conditions. Tell the counter at pickup that you are going to Canada, check that your insurance covers you there, and ask before planning to return the car in Canada.

Driving gives you the most freedom in Ontario. In downtown Toronto, factor in traffic and hotel or garage parking.

By Uber or Lyft

Uber and Lyft do not cross the border from Buffalo. Buffalo drivers do not take rides into Canada, even when the app shows a fare estimate for a Toronto address. Why Uber and Lyft won't cross the border.

Is There a Ferry?

No. Buffalo sits on Lake Erie and Toronto on Lake Ontario, with Niagara Falls between them, so no passenger ferry connects the two cities. Toronto's ferries only go to the Toronto Islands.

Door to Door

By Private Taxi

A private taxi is the only option that picks you up at Buffalo Airport arrivals or your Buffalo address and drops you at your door in Toronto. The fare is a flat $330 to downtown Toronto or Toronto Pearson, with tolls included, and the ride takes about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the border.

It costs more than the bus. It makes sense when you are travelling with luggage, as a group splitting the fare, late at night, or on a schedule the bus and train do not fit.
